| It was the 2008 Championship match, every ball was nail biting and heart pounding when we where chasing 30 runs with one wicket in hand to anchor the country’s (USA) largest league’s ‘Champion’ title. After a fierce ball and bat battle, we won the 'Division I' finals!

| Nothing can beat the anticipation and excitement of recruiting an overseas player from the southern hemisphere or the sub continent to play for your cricket club. Even when you dispatch someone off to the airport you never really know what caliber of player or type of character you are actually getting or even whether they are going to turn up! Its not until they finally take to the cricket field and have played their first few innings or bowled their first few spells do you know whether all the effort has been worthwhile. Unlike many other team sports one player can actually make a significant difference to a club cricket team and it is for this reason that the majority of cricket clubs in the U.K. go through this process each year. Yes, there is the justification that having a better player or, a professional playing in an amateur team, will motivate and bring the best out the other players he plays with. The better overseas players do bring a touch of class to the team, are exciting to watch and may win you the promotion that you might otherwise not have achieved. The better overseas players can enhance the club by providing coaching to junior members and there is always immediate respect for someone who has played at a standard of cricket the majority of us only dream of. There will always be the argument offered against having an overseas player that it prevents younger players being given a chance. In my experience this is definitely not the case. If a younger player is good enough he will be found a place in the team anyway and I have yet to find a player who does not relish the opportunity of playing in the same team as someone who has played at a far higher level. There are numerous stories of Australian overseas players who turn up have stated they played first grade cricket back home and were in their state age group squad, but when they actually bat or bowl would not look out of place in your fourth eleven!
